9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number system that links to the appropriate emergency service – Police, Fire, or Emergency Medical Service (EMS).
Calling
When calling 9-1-1, be prepared to give the following information:
Name, address and telephone number
The nature of the emergency
An exact location of where the emergency has occurred
The 9-1-1 telephone system has an Automatic Location Identification System and an Automatic Number Identification System (ANI / ALI) that lets the dispatcher know the address and telephone number you are calling from. However, cellular calls will not provide ANI / ALI information to the dispatcher.
Emergencies & Non-Emergencies
An emergency is a situation where the safety of people or property is at risk, for example
a fire, or a medical emergency.
It is not an emergency when the situation is not dangerous and immediate action is not necessary.
